It's all Pearl's and Gems at The Beary Scrap

Can you believe how close Christmas is now!! I still have to go shopping and I'm running out of time, but I always seem to have time to color. Our new challenge at
The Beary Scrap is Pearls or Gems.
How easy is that. Now I had to quickly make up another card other than what I had planned on posting because my project for this week is still hanging on my desk and I haven't been able to get a good picture to post. I don't want to post it here till the person it's meant for gets it first, but be sure to check out next weeks posts because you're going to love it, and I hope she does to.
My paper is from Echo Park from the Merry Christmas line. I used a stamp from Sparkle Creations Christmas Tree Ruby and stamped her on X-Press it paper and colored her with Copics and added Stickles to the Christmas tree. I cut her out with Spellbinders. I added some pearls from Prima's Say it in Pearls, and Queen and Co Pearls Classy Red. I used Glue Dots to hold my ribbon in place. I have hand stitching around the outside of my card.
Now how easy is our new challenge?? Very easy!
So now lets see what you can make and enter your card ---HERE---

Now today is also the new release on some new members of the Tear Bear family and I can't wait to tear up these cuties.
Are they not the cutest!!

Thanks so much for looking.

Reindeer Tilda is seeing Pink!

Hi, it's Gini, and I just wanted to remind you that today is the last day to enter your sketch for the Beary Scrap Challenge. I've made another card using this sketch and it looks so different than my last one! I used Reindeer Tilda and lots of fun papers from MME - Fine and Dandy - Tickled Pink collection. This collection is so useful any time of the year - can't you just imagine some wonderful Valentine's projects with it? I thought Tilda would like sitting in the window, watching all of the snow fall (which is what it is doing here in NC!). The window was cut with Heartfelt Creations Decorative Window Scene Spellbinder's die. I found some clear acrylic snowflakes among some inexpensive Christmas decorations, and colored them using alcohol inks, as inspired by all of the fabulous techniques of Tim Holtz.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for another fun challenge from the Beary Scrap!

Woodland Tilda In A Sketch

Hello friends! It's such a busy season - I hope you found a few moments of sanity! Husband and I went on a Christmas House Tour and had a great time! I'm late writing this post so I'll get to the "good stuff". *wink*

I have another sample from our cool Beary Sweet Challenge sketch. The entry deadline is tomorrow night so there's still time to whip up a fabulous project and enter. You could win $20 gift voucher from The Beary Scrap!

Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas is . . .

12 sheets of cardstock
11 Copic markers
10 bottles of Stickles
9 boxes of glue dots
8 packs of rhinestones
7 sheets designer paper
6 Tear Bear Patterns
5 ink pads
4 Magnolia stamps
3 brand new punches
2 Glimmer Mists
and
a sketch to play with!

Here is another Christmas layout based on our current sketch (I hope you all are also creating something with this sketch to enter in our challenge!

To create a double 12 x 12 layout this week from the sketch, I stretched it out over two pages, expanding and adding a few more elements (photos) and quickly drew out my own version of the original design:

My Mind's Eye Holly Jolly paper was just perfect for this sketch as I could use the Santa paper and leave Santa as one large element on the far right side of the paper (I love the Vintage look of this Santa plus the beautiful deep red, greens and browns of the paper!)

Taking my inspiration from Susan's card that used this paper a few weeks ago, I added some Lime Green and Christmas Red Stickles to my Santa to give him a little shine. Replacing the snowflakes that were on the original sketch, I have used holly leaves cut from a good old Sizzix die in the two corners of my layout.

I wanted my die cuts to have a little dimension, so I actually cut out two for each holly leaf, inked both edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink by Tim Holtz, adhered one to the paper and then popped up the second one on top of the first with a foam square. Then the top leaves are edged with more Lime Green Stickles and finished off with rhinestone "berries." I also added a few die cut shapes from the Holly Jolly Accessory sheet (SANTA letters, tickets and December calendar).

You've seen lots of great examples of this sketch in the last two weeks and now we can't wait to see yours! Make sure to enter our current Beary Sweet Challenge before 11:59 EST on Dec. 14th for a chance to win a $20.00 voucher from some sweet goodies from The Beary Scrap. Maybe you can get some of those scrap goodies that are on your Christmas list!

The Beary Scrap Sketch Challenge plus a Die

I have another sample of our Sketch Challenge this week and there is an added challenge for the Designers we have to add a Die. Not so much a challenge for me I aways use Dies I love them.
Susan had such a cute Sketch for us on the new Challenge that I have actually used it for all my Christmas Cards and here is a sample of one of my Christmas cards that I'm sending out.
My background paper is from Echo Park the Merry Christmas line it's so pretty I just love it, and after playing with the Holly Jolly paper from My Minds Eye I didn't think I was going to love another paper line but when I got this in the mail from The Beary Scrap Store I just loved it just as much. I made a peeker Tear Bear with an Acrylic Paper Piecing Pattern and Mulberry Paper. I cut out my Merry Christmas tag with Spellbinders and Inked with Colorbox Ink as well as the one my Tear Bear is on. I added some Stickles to my tag and some snowflake buttons from my stash. I kept my card with clean straight lines so it was mailing friendly. The only this I didn't consider was the weight it's a pretty heavy card so the mail is going to love me for that one ($$).

Now I wanted to do something different so I made the Tear Bear also a Christmas ornament to be used year after year.
This is so simple to make. As you notice I added my Stickles after my card was together I thought it needed a little more.

I added some ribbon to the top and glued it in place so it wouldn't move when I put it together.
Now on the back of my ornament I added a 2010 date to remember what year this is from. To attach to my card I only added 3 3M Foam Squares, I used these one's because they are not that sticky so they will be able to just pick them off to hang. I didn't added one the the top because I will be tucking the ribbon underneath.

Now for some of my non-crafty friends I added a little note to the back letting them know that the Tear Bear was an ornament.
It's says: Front of card contains a removable Christmas ornament.

Here is a sneak peek of the inside.
Don't for get to enter our Beary Sweet Sketch Challenge ---HERE---
Thanks for looking.

Brrrrr! The Snow is Falling!

Hi! It's Gini and since I have started seeing a little snow falling outside my window, I was inspired to make this card. I really love the sketch challenge we have going on now -it is so versatile, I'm sure I will be using it again. I got to play with some of the new goodies in the store for this card - Bo Bunny's Midnight Frost and Magnolia "MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS" Tilda with Fir Tree. I think Midnight Frost is proving quite popular among the DT!

I cut my snowflakes out using Spellbinders and embellished them with a little bling. For my Tilda, I colored her with copics, added stickles to her coat, puff paint for her fur, and ultra fine Flower Soft in Pine over the tree. I love how this created lots of dimension.

I hope you will get a chance to play along with us!

Snow Hugs and a Layering Tutorial

Hello dear friends! I hope you had a great weekend. We had a crazy busy one and as I write this Sunday night I am exhausted. (But in a good way!) As you read this Monday, it is a new day with new challenges and new crafty projects to conquer!

Today I am sharing my layering technique. It is now just about the only way I can make a stamped image "work" for me. When I look at new stamps or digital images I automatically start layering them in my mind. :)

Ok, so here is my card based on our current Beary Sweet Sketch Challenge. The design team will take it a little further this week and add die cuts to our cards. You don't have to have a die cut in your challenge entry, just be sure to follow our simple rules and enter your project by the end of the day on December 14th. You could win $20 gift voucher from The Beary Scrap!

Don't you just love these Bo Bunny "Midnight Frost" papers? Oh my goodness, I am in love! I've added loads of texture with embossing folders and used embellishments from the Midnight Frost collection. I'll add all the "card ingredient" details after the tutorial. This layering takes a lot of patience, and if you choose not to tackle it I hope you can find something useful for your projects! Thanks for looking. :)

Susan's Layering Tutorial

Step 1: Materials
  • Stamped images - I usually have 3
  • Layering plan - see the top left
    • Layer 1 - base
    • Layer 2 - clothing, hats, Snowy's buttons
    • Layer 3 - broom with handle, Tilda's left arm
  • Coloring medium - I use Copic markers and Prismacolor pencils
  • Sharp scissors - can't say enough about Cutter Bee - perfect!; also use Fiskars finger cutter and gray Helix mat for interior cuts
  • Black marker with brush tip - I love the Marvy Le Plume but haven't tried any others
  • 3D adhesive - I usually use silicone because I can control the thickness. I've also used Glue Dots with good results *and* I just learned of a new 3D adhesive that might replace my silicone. I'll let you know how it tests out when I get my hot little hands on it!
  • Round ended implement (in photo below) - can be paint brush handle or anything that has a small round end... this will make sense later. :)
  • Foam mat (in photo below) - cushions while you use the round ended implement

Step 2: Color, Cut and Edge

Left - right: Base, middle and top layers
As you can see here, I have colored, embellished and cut all my layers. It's important to let your liquid embellishments (Stickles, glossy Accents, etc) dry completely before edging with the black marker. Otherwise the marker will bleed into the Stickles or other medium you use. It's not pretty.

Carefully run the edge of the black brush marker along the edge of the image. Always come from behind because you *will* touch the image with the tip of the marker accidentally. On the back it's no big deal! The very tip of the marker will get into the small spots - just be careful to keep your pen moving; otherwise the ink will soak into the paper.

Step 4: Rounding the Edges

With gentle pressure, "draw" little circles around the edges to create a light curve. The small accessories have all been done. I have been using the round end of a paint brush handle and recently found this blue glass swizzle stick with a slightly larger ball on the end. In the Step 2 photo above, you can see both this swizzle stick and the paint brush handle; the larger ball makes smoother edges. The foam mat absorbs some of the pressure and allows for clean edges.

This Cryogen Irridescent paper shows the circles well:

Step 5: Stick 'Em Together

If you refer back to the original photo in Step 2, you'll see that my base layer is stamped on the patterned paper. We'll save that for last. Here I have squeezed out silicone on my top layers. I know how much to put on so it doesn't ooze out, but I suggest you start with the less-is-more philosophy and add more for more height as you become more familiar with it. Cleaning the oozing parts is messy and you have to be fast.

I use tweezers to apply the layers *very carefully*. You may need to put a small amount of pressure to align the parts and give the adhesive a chance to grab. I will fiddle with the pieces for a minute or two with slight pressure at all times to make sure my lines match up.

Here are those two layers. (The Cryogen paper is really reflecting the light!)

Step 6: Add the Final Layer

The layer stamped onto patterned paper includes the original snow outline at the bottom. I've filled it in with puffy snow stuff and then dotted the dry snow stuff with Stickles Star Dust. From here, you can finish the card as you like!

Thanks so much for reading through this tutorial. I hope it inspires your images to pop off the page! If you have any questions please feel free to email me. I will do my best to help you out!

Card Recipe
Wow, that's it. :) I hope this is useful to you! Hey, there's plenty of time to give this technique a whirl and enter it into our Beary Sweet Sketch Challenge. I would LOVE to see your layered projects!

Cheers,
Susan

Ask The Designers: Creative Slump?

Today's question is this: How do you get out of a creative slump?

Patricia: When I'm stuck for ideas I like to blog hop or search for inspiration from the internet. If I'm stuck for a challenge project, for example "Vintage"-theme (I have a real hard time with that one), I will search for vintage images on Google. I will also ask fellow designers for help with ideas. You never know when your mojo is on a break that someone else has extra to share. When you're stuck for an idea don't be afraid to ask other people; we all have been there and you never know they may give you an idea you never thought of.

Gini: There are some days that I just have no creative mojo - and I usually just stop and don't try to force it to happen. Then in the next day or so, I will be inspired by a new paper or stamp, or might even have a great aah-ha moment as I fall asleep. If I try to force myself to be creative, it just turns into a disaster!

Susan: I completely agree with Gini - I have to walk away and let time pass. Usually a couple of hours away from the studio will realign my noodle. I've also thumbed through Magnolia Ink magazines to see their detail work - there is always something that inspires me. I've been thinking a lot about techniques lately, so reading about something new can also get the juices flowing.

Now friends, it's your turn - What recharges your creative batteries?

Thanks for your support - we love getting your questions! Please join in and Ask the Designers!

Cheers,
The Beary Scrappy Girls
