DIY Crinoline Flower

Hello crafty friends! This week the design team is continuing with Do It Yourself Embellishment samples to go along with our current challenge. I've been a fan of crinoline flowers seen here and there and decided to try it myself!

I used Tim Holtz/Sizzix Tattered Florals die and cut three medium flowers and 2 of the smallest flowers on the die. I pressed one of each flower size into a Spun Sugar Distress Ink pad, and the others were spritzed with Glimmer Mist. It has a pink-ish brown-ish color and was perfect for the vintage look. I used a heat tool and tweezers to dry each flower then poked a hole in the centers. The flower "pollen" is a button from the My Mind's Eye Market Street button set. 

The tag is cut using the Tim Holtz Tag & Bookplate die. I used the Madison Avenue Dress Shop Glitter paper. Ages ago I cut out the dress form from this paper but never used the rest of it. Luckily I cut close enough to the form that I was able to use the sewing machine image as a design element on this tag, weeks later. Yay for pack rats!

Take 2 for Gini's sketch

Hi, it's Gini here with my 2nd project for the Beary Scrap's June sketch. This week I used the gorgeous papers from Prima's Reflections line. With a great sketch, a card can really come together quickly. I sprayed a Tattered Angels frame with Glimmer Mist, cut out a Spellbinder's butterfly, and added a couple of seam binding ribbons. For my butterfly's body, I added some white Kaisercraft pearls.

Sketchy Dragonfly

Hello crafty friends! It's another Monday - oh, how does the weekend go so fast? It was a beautiful one here, and we took advantage and trimmed trees and weeded. I hated the work but love the results!

This week the design team is showing samples using our current Beary Sweet Sketch Challenge. We're adding a little extra element to our projects in the form of seam binding.

Here's my take on the sketch. I wasn't sure about the sketch at first, but fell in love with it as I pulled the Bo Bunny Vicky B papers together. There are so many wonderful designs in this 6x6 paper stack that I had no problem at all. I adore these colors!

I used the wooden dragonfly from Pink Paislee's Butterfly Garden collection (currently sold out in the store - sorry!). I gave it a base coat of pearly white and pink acrylic paints and then painted the body and part of the wings with glue, then sprinkled copper German Glass Glitter. On the wing tips I used the German Glass Glitter in white, with an itty bitty bit of Star Dust Stickles on the very ends.

The pink brads are from My Mind's Eye Madison Ave and the green swirl brad in the flower is from the We R Memory Keepers "Inspiration" Eyelet & Snap set. 

The mulberry paper roses were spritzed with a light green Glimmer Mist and touched with Star Dust Stickles. The  crocheted flower is an Etsy find and the decorative pins are my own design.

Nature Inspiration

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you have enjoyed our nature themed projects this week-- I certainly have loved looking at all the DT girls gorgeous creations! They inspire me every day!

My second nature project is a card and what better papers for a nature project could there be than Pink Paislee's Butterfly Garden line?

The base of my card is Bazzill Swiss Dot cardstock and then I have two different layers of the Pink Paislee papers machine stitched to complete the background. I spritzed some doilies (found a big package of them at the dollar store! I love bargains!) with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Sweet Clover to give them a light green, glittery look.


I punched two circles for the center of the doilies and also one to overlap them in the center. For the center circle, I also made a circle frame for the butterfly and popped it up with foam squares. My butterfly is cut from one of the Pink Paislee patterned papers and I cut two of them to give it a little more dimension. After I took my pictures and loaded them, I thought I should have put Stickles around the edge of the butterfly wings so I will be going back to do that!


I finished off my card by embellishing it with some Kaiser Craft pearls, seam binding (Cocoa) bow and a Pink Paislee butterfly charm. Here's a peek at the inside, which I left fairly simply so there is plenty of room to write.

Believe You Can Fly

Hi, it's Gini - I hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend! I had an extra day off, so a little extra time to craft! This week we will be wrapping up our things with wings challenge at the Beary Scrap. You have until April 30th to get your entry in.

This has been such a fun challenge! Today, I used the lovely Butterfly Garden from Pink Paislee. Even the wooden dragonfly is from this line. Now, I did do quite I bit of altering on it! I used Stickles, Glimmer Mist, Smooch - and then sanded it all to distress it a bit. I also used some of the yummy seam binding that Kimm just got in the store. I am really going to be stocking up on that stuff - it just makes a project look so great! My sentiment is from Unity Stamps.

Butterfly Garden

Hey there crafty folks! I hope you had a great weekend. Can you believe it's Monday already? *sheesh* This week the design team is fluttering around with a "Wings" theme. As you know, our Beary Sweet challenge is going on right now with the very same "Wings" theme! What a coincidence... :)

Last week Patricia used Colorbox chalk ink on her Pink Paislee butterfly wood shape with great success. For my project today I decided to get out the acrylic paints and see what would happen.

Hee hee, I can't say I totally love it, but it's not bad.  I painted the russet color then used a dry brush to swish the lighter, orange-y color on the center parts. The swirls are made from Ranger's Liquid Pearls and a not-so-steady hand. Honestly, I can't draw a stick figure standing straight. *sigh*

The paper is Pink Paislee's Butterfly Garden 12x12 sheet of "Flower Blooms". I cut is specifically to show the bumble bee and clock along the right edge. One of the things I really like about these decorated 12x12's is how I can pick and choose what section to use. The inside layers are also from the same sheet, but different sections and different 'scenes'. I'll add photos of the inside once it's completed. As the card came together I ended up putting the seam binding/calendar grouping on the right instead of the planned left corner. It covered the bumble bee but made more sense with the other elements.

The Beary Scrap will have loads of seam binding on the shelves soon - I can't wait for all the yummy colors!  It's all wrapped up with a button from My Mind's Eye/Lost & Found/Madison Avenue. The pin is made from my supplies. I spritzed some of the mulberry roses with Vanilla Breeze Glimmer Mist. The grungeboard swirls were colored with distress stain and then spritzed with the same Glimmer Mist.

The calendar is a digital print and interchangeable with other months - I didn't attach it because I'm not sure how it will be used. I'm partial to May, though, since I celebrate my birthday all month.

I wanted to show you the layering that can be done with Distress inks and a Ranger Blending Tool. Here's a photo of the three blending stages:

Ok, maybe it's really only two stages! First I used green Peeled Paint on the edge and toward the middle a little, then used Vintage Photo on the edge only. Adding the Vintage Photo gives it a little more depth and a  vintage feel!

Butterfly Wings

Welcome to our brand new Beary Sweet Challenge, I am first up again and absolutely thrilled to show you my layout of "Things with Wings." Two weeks ago, we had a "girls" trip to Las Vegas, Nevada (about 10 hours from where I live). My youngest sister and her family live there and so my other sister and I took our daughters, along with my mom, to visit for Spring Break. We had a fabulous time, soaking up some much needed sun by the pool and visiting some Vegas sights (I do have a picture of daughter with some Elvis impersonators-- I'll save that for another week!).


One of the highlights was lunch at Serendipity 3- a really fun restaurant near Caesar's Palace (check out our frozen hot chocolate, yum!)- and visiting the Bellagio Conservatory which was planted with tulips, poppies and even butterflies! These were the perfect pictures for my layout this week--


I had so much fun making this layout and using lots of fun new goodies from the store including Pink Paislee's Butterfly Garden papers (absolutely gorgeous!) and charms.


Other great stuff I used includes seam binding-- new for me but oh so much fun! I spritzed with water and crinkled it up then sprayed with Pearl Gimmer Mist and adhered to my layout with glue lines. Seam binding in many colors will be in stock soon so check the store website! I also used lace and some handmade crocheted flowers-- I must still be on that vintage kick that seems to be going on around here!

Spring is almost here!

Spring is almost here - less than a week until the official start. So with that in mind, the Beary Scrap's latest challenge is Spring. After all of the snow from this winter, I don't think too many people will mind warmer weather and beautiful flowers.

I made a round card today using the Spellbinders Grand dies. Do you know how easy it is to make shaped cards with these large dies? I just scored my 12" cardstock at 6 inches, using my Scor-pal, then I taped the die down on the top of this fold with part of the die extending past the fold. This way when it cuts, it just cuts the shape up to the fold. My papers for today are once again Echo Park's For the Record. In the center of my handmade flower, I added one of the Beary Scraps mulberry roses (that I misted to match my card.)

You're The Cherry On Top!

Hello hello dear friends! Whew - can't believe it's already Monday. Weekend was crazy busy at our house and I'm glad for a Monday break. :)

I am the "caboose" on our Beary Sweet "Friendship or Love" challenge. Today is the last bit of inspiration before a new challenge starts tomorrow. I consider this card 'light and airy' compared to my other samples. It's pretty versatile, don'tcha think?

It's the first time I've inked up a stamp in weeks - can you believe it? Sweet Tilda is a single layer... *gasp!* It's kind of refreshing to make a single layer image. Not sure how often I'll do it this way, but I do like this one! :)

All of the glitter detail (banners, dots, bird, etc.) is Stickles - the paper isn't glittered. I know! MME putting out a paper without glitter - what's up with that? Hee hee. This Tickled Pink line is absolutely adorable!

Gini's Friendship card

Hi, It's Gini here to share with you my first Friendship/Love themed card. Since that's our theme, you know I had to use Echo Park's Be Mine collection. I think by now, I am their's - LOL! The stamp is from JustRite Stampers and was colored with Copics and inked with Worn Lipstick Distress ink. I sewed some button hole trim on canvas and colored it with Glimmer Mist. I made my paper ruffle by scoring (on my Scor-pal) every half inch on black cardstock, gluing ribbon along one edge with Scor- tape and then pleating it.

Hello hello and Happy Monday! We're off on a new challenge here at The Beary Scrap DT and Challenge blog. Our theme for this challenge is

Friendship or Love

Since Husband and I love each other dearly but *don't* observe Valentine's Day, I started out with a friendship theme. As things happen, this card took on a life of it's own and I've fallen in love with it. *grin*

The flower... oh the flower! Don't you just love it? I used Patricia's video tutorial for my flower and made it using Basic Grey's Curio paper. (The flower is the large template.) I can't wait to try it with grungepaper. Check it out HERE at her blog! Thanks so much Patricia for putting together such a wonderfully detailed tutorial.

The "Things I Love" layer is a card stock embellishment from the My Mind's Eye/Laundry Line/Coastal collection. Yes, I know it says "things" as in plural... but I'm claiming artistic license and only listing one thing - YOU. *wink* I spritzed it with a little water and carefully crunched it up to get the creased effect and allowed to dry. Then I spritzed with Pearl Glimmer Mist for the sparklies.

Some other details - the butterfly is from one of the Curio papers. I painted it with Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint, dried, cut out and inked the edges with Distress ink. The antennae are hand made with a piece of black wire, dried glue and black paint. The Scrabble tile edges were roughed up with a nail file and consoled with a walnut ink-stained chunk of foam.

Tag, You're It

Hello friends! I hope you had a swell weekend. I'm not really sure what we did... oh, right... took down the Christmas trees and decorations and stored 'em away for another year. Post Christmas shopping found a great ornament organizer that now hold scads of glass ornaments without a single piece of tissue wrap. Yay! Besides carrying the bins from the attic to the first floor, the "job" we hated the most was unwrapping (and rewrapping) all those darn keepsakes. Now we can decorate directly from the trays and have more time for eggnog. *wink*

This week the design team will show you new interpretations of our BSC #17 Sketch Challenge. We're also adding a "new" element to our projects:

Sketch Plus Something New 

Everyone who comes to see my newest colored Magnolias will think I've fallen off my rocker this week. I'm OK, really! I've always been a fan of collage style and especially like what Tim Holtz has to offer our crafty community. I'm hugely inspired by vintage - be it ephemera or textiles, new or reproduction, I'm all over it. You might have seen oversized tags on blogs throughout the internet over the Christmas season - mostly inspired by the very same Tim Holtz. With this project I've dipped my toe in the water. My "new" is a tag shape made with a new Tim Holtz die!

Kinda cool, no? All of the papers are My Mind's Eye Union Square, from the beautiful and brilliant "Lost and Found" series.The "Home is a Little Slice of Heaven" die cut is from the Union Square accessory sheet. The pointing hand brad is from the same line (although the brad pack is currently sold out - sorry!).

I have to share a happy accident. The tag was assembled with Frosted Lace Stickles on the top flourish. I decided it needed to be a little flashier and added a layer of Platinum Stickles and used a heat gun to dry it. Little did I know that the heat gun was also doing interesting things to the Bazzill tulle! It curled edges and made much of the tulle wavy - luckily I caught it before it burned the edges brown. I like the tattered effect!

This was a really simple project to conceive, and agonizing to finish. I'm still thinking I need to balance the glitter swirl on the top with a touch of the same on the bottom. What do you think? I'm open to suggestions!

Tilda Swirls with Gems

Well hello, there! It's Monday and the last Monday before Christmas. Er, not significant in general, but it just means I've been running around like a crazy person trying to find the "perfect gift" for my husband. We replaced a couple of kitchen appliances last month and that was going to be our Christmas. Of course, neither of us can go without presents under the tree. :) So, I'm scouring the antique stores for the perfect gift. No luck yet! *sigh*

So this week the Beary Scrap design team girls are showing examples of our current challenge theme - use pearls or gems. Here's my sample:

The paper is Echo Park's "Wintertime" line. EP is doing cool things with paper - they've reduced some of their designs to fit 4 different ones on a 12 x 12 sheet. The background paper here is actually a mini version of the "Flurry" design. The full size "Flurry" is used on the envelope box (see below). Check out the Wintertime line at TBS to see what I'm on about. This mini "Flurry" can be found on the back side of 12x12 "Damask". The middle panel is full-size "Snow", and the top layer - right behind Tilda - is on of the journaling cards enhanced with Stickles. All of the blue layers are "Blizzard Blue".

Darling Tilda is made up of a couple of layers, with loads of Stickles to accent. Her lantern is includes Glossy Accents in the "glass" panels, and her mittens and socks are covered in fuzzy white flock.

I edged the plain white flower with Distress Ink in Weathered Wood and Star Dust Stickles. All the flowers were spritzed with Pearl Glimmer Mist and dotted with the same Stickles.

Here's a view of the inside panel - I enhanced the swirl and snowflake design in the paper with Stickles... I can't stop with the sparkle!

And here's the whole kit and kaboodle. I used another journaling card for the name plate on the front, with a little Stickles on these snowflakes also.

Snow Hugs and a Layering Tutorial

Hello dear friends! I hope you had a great weekend. We had a crazy busy one and as I write this Sunday night I am exhausted. (But in a good way!) As you read this Monday, it is a new day with new challenges and new crafty projects to conquer!

Today I am sharing my layering technique. It is now just about the only way I can make a stamped image "work" for me. When I look at new stamps or digital images I automatically start layering them in my mind. :)

Ok, so here is my card based on our current Beary Sweet Sketch Challenge. The design team will take it a little further this week and add die cuts to our cards. You don't have to have a die cut in your challenge entry, just be sure to follow our simple rules and enter your project by the end of the day on December 14th. Don't you just love these Bo Bunny "Midnight Frost" papers? Oh my goodness, I am in love! I've added loads of texture with embossing folders and used embellishments from the Midnight Frost collection. I'll add all the "card ingredient" details after the tutorial. This layering takes a lot of patience, and if you choose not to tackle it I hope you can find something useful for your projects! Thanks for looking. :)

Susan's Layering Tutorial

Step 1: Materials

• Stamped images - I usually have 3
• Layering plan - see the top left
• Layer 1 - base
• Layer 2 - clothing, hats, Snowy's buttons
• Layer 3 - broom with handle, Tilda's left arm
• Coloring medium - I use Copic markers and Prismacolor pencils
• Sharp scissors - can't say enough about Cutter Bee - perfect!; also use Fiskars finger cutter and gray Helix mat for interior cuts
• Black marker with brush tip - I love the Marvy Le Plume but haven't tried any others
• 3D adhesive - I usually use silicone because I can control the thickness. I've also used Glue Dots with good results *and* I just learned of a new 3D adhesive that might replace my silicone. I'll let you know how it tests out when I get my hot little hands on it!
• Round ended implement (in photo below) - can be paint brush handle or anything that has a small round end... this will make sense later. :)
• Foam mat (in photo below) - cushions while you use the round ended implement

Step 2: Color, Cut and Edge

As you can see here, I have colored,embellished and cut all my layers. It's important to let your liquid embellishments (Stickles, glossy Accents, etc) dry completely before edging with the black marker. Otherwise the marker will bleed into the Stickles or other medium you use. It's not pretty.

Carefully run the edge of the black brush marker along the edge of the image. Always come from behind because you *will* touch the image with the tip of the marker accidentally. On the back it's no big deal! The very tip of the marker will get into the small spots - just be careful to keep your pen moving; otherwise the ink will soak into the paper.

Step 4: Rounding the Edges

With gentle pressure, "draw" little circles around the edges to create a light curve. The small accessories have all been done. I have been using the round end of a paint brush handle and recently found this blue glass swizzle stick with a slightly larger ball on the end. In the Step 2 photo above, you can see both this swizzle stick and the paint brush handle; the larger ball makes smoother edges. The foam mat absorbs some of the pressure and allows for clean edges.

Step 5: Stick 'Em Together

If you refer back to the original photo in Step 2, you'll see that my base layer is stamped on the patterned paper. We'll save that for last. Here I have squeezed out silicone on my top layers. I know how much to put on so it doesn't ooze out, but I suggest you start with the less-is-more philosophy and add more for more height as you become more familiar with it. Cleaning the oozing parts is messy and you have to be fast.

I use tweezers to apply the layers *very carefully*. You may need to put a small amount of pressure to align the parts and give the adhesive a chance to grab. I will fiddle with the pieces for a minute or two with slight pressure at all times to make sure my lines match up.

Here are those two layers. (The Cryogen paper is really reflecting the light!)

Step 6: Add the Final Layer

The layer stamped onto patterned paper includes the original snow outline at the bottom. I've filled it in with puffy snow stuff and then dotted the dry snow stuff with Stickles Star Dust. From here, you can finish the card as you like!

Last Day for our Anything Goes Challenge!

Hi, it's Gini and I just wanted to remind you that today is the final day for the Beary Scrap's Anything Goes challenge. If you haven't gotten an entry in, you better do it!

I tried something different today. I made a blackboard/clipboard using Pink Paislee's Queen Bee paper. I spray painted my clipboard using chalkboard paint from the hardware store. I stamped a bee from the Queen Bee clear impressions stamp set using white ink onto the board. I love having matching stamp sets to go with a paper line! The flower is made from felt punched from a scalloped circle punch, and then just sewn together. The leaves beneath the flower were cut with my Cricut using the Botanicals cartridge. I still wanted a little more pizzaz to my project, so I added lace (colored with Apple Glimmer mist), velvet ribbon and a Pink Paislee brad with the back snipped off to the blackboard.

Flower Tutorial with Gini

Have you noticed how big banners are? They are everywhere! Banner stamps and papers - really cute seasonal banners? I love them! And this week the Beary Scrappy Gals are being inspired by banners. If you would like to play with along with our challenge, it's still Anything Goes (you don't have to do anything with banners).

I made a layout today featuring my sweet nephew Will. He has taught me so much about unconditional love...He makes my heart happy. I used this wonderful sparkly banner paper from MME Lost and Found - Union Square. You may also notice that fabulous Dusty Attic chipboard - Did you know that Beary Scrap will soon be selling Dusty Attic -yay!!!!

I have been having so much fun making this hand crafted flowers, I just had to share with you how I do it! For these flowers I used Heartfelt Creations Innoscents Flowers 1 and 2, and Spellbinders Blossom 2 Nestbilities. I just bought some cheap white satin at Walmart for $1/yard.


You will want to stamp a couple of each flower size onto the satin using Staz-on inks.


After you have all of your flowers stamped out, cut them with your nestabilities. I have found if you are trying to cut fabric, it works much better if you put a layer of cardstock underneath it. It gives the die a little more to grab onto.




You may still have to trim just a little, if it doesn't cut all the way through.



You can choose any color to make your flower just by spraying them with Glimmer Mist. I used Fully Purple and Dewberry.




To speed the drying, I use my heat gun. I love laying out my flowers on my magnetic precision mat and holding them in place with magnets to dry. This keeps me from burning my fingers.



Next, you are going to melt the edges of all the flowers over a candle flame. You don't have to get it too near, or you will have some little fires to tend to!


Sometimes I will curl the petal as I melt it to help shape it.



For some of the top layers, I cut away the bottom flower layer - or sometimes cut into the petal to make it deeper. You can play around with it for different effects.


Here are all of the flowers shaped by the flame. I also cut some plain bronze organza and melted the edges of that for a different layer.



You are going to sew the layers together, but cut a little square of felt to put between the layers to space them.


Add beads or a button to the center of the flower.



After my flower was assembled, I painted a thin layer of Platinum Stickles over the top.
